Propps character roles.
In the movie i have chosen which is Django unchained there are few characters which are the main people in the movie. Vladimir propp who is a russian critic and literary theorist proposed that it was possible to classify the characters and their actions into clearly defined roles and functions. The hero in the movie is none other than Django (Jamie foxx). The villains in the movie are Calvin Candie( Leonardo Dicaprio and Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson). The donor in this movie is Dr King Schultz who helps Django throughout the movie until he is unfortunately shot who is played by Christoph Waltz. The dispatcher is also Dr King Schultz. The helper in the movie is also Dr King Schultz. The princess who is the damsel in distress and the reward for the hero, is Broom Hilda Von Shaft (Kerry Washington).
Barthes
Also in my movie there are narratives. Roland Barthes who is a French semiologist suggested that narrative works with five narrative codes which activate the reader to make sense of it. These are Action, Enigma, Symbolic, Semic and Cultural. The action narrative in the movie is the shootout which is near to the end. The enigma in the movie which the puzzle Django is trying to solve is the way how to get to his wife. In the final scene i have chosen you can see that he is standing tall with the damsel in distress beside him which symbolises strongly that he has overcome every obstacle to get to his his wife. The cultural device in the movie is the villain who is made man who is part of a gangster cult.
Todorov
In movies there's always beginning middle and end. Tzevetan Todorov is a bulgarian literary theorist who suggested most narratives start with a state of equilibrium in which life is 'normal' and protagonists happy. This state of normality is disrupted by an outside force, which has to be fought against in order to return to a state of equilibrium. This is applied to many films. In my film its kind of different to other films. The equilibrium starts of with a slave who is captured but then escapes. The disequilibrium is him overcoming all the obstacles with his helper to stop him from finding his wife. The new equilibrium is that he finds his wife and stands tall.
Levi-strauss
In most movies there's normally conflict because their culture has a history of not liking a particular group. The person who came up with this is claude levi-strauss who is a social anthropologist who studied myths of tribal cultures. He examined how stories unconsciously reflect the values, beliefs and myths of a culture. These are usually expressed in the form of binary oppositions. In my chosen movie there is conflict because its kind of a slave movie but not so much when it starts get going.
Opening.
In the opening of my movie Django Unchained the start of the movie kind of sets a scene in your head which is that this movie is to do with slave labour. The main character Django is introduced to us as a slave. You can tell because he is in a line with other slaves and all of them have got whip marks on their backs. The villains in the opening scene are introduced as just workers because they are leading the way for the slaves to follow. Their actions show this by them riding on horses whilst leading the way of the slaves.
The narrative is starting to get established because you can see it is to do with slavery and the struggle of slavery which escalates into a bigger story. The audience get captivated by the villains who are walking the slaves up and they want to know where they are leading them. The theme in the movie is established right at the start because you can see slaves at the beginning walking slowly in pain.
The core props are established in the setting because it is set in a desert and you can see it is extremely hot which is shown by the sweat dripping of the slaves. Also core props are shown by the way the slaves are in shackles, hands and feet.
