Sound in T.V and Film
Sound.
Sound is vibrations. Sound has pitch, rhythm, tempo and volume. It resonates. In film there are two types of sound, diegetic and non diegetic.
Glossary-
1. Diegetic- This sounds source is within the fims world.
2. Non-diegetic- This is sound represented as coming from a source outside the story space.
3. Ambient- Used to create a particular atmosphere or a sense of pace.
4. SFX- SFX is a linking technology that facilitates context-sensitive linking between various web resources, and allows libraries to combine electronic resources to function as a cohesive, one-stop reference system.
5. Mood- Mood is a temporary state of mind that the scene is giving you.
6. Tone- Tone is a musical or vocal sound with reference to its pitch.
7. Genre- Genre is what kind of type the movie is and the music with it.
8. Theme music- Music that introduces, develops throughout and ends the film.
9. Voice over- This is the voice of a character.
10. Musical score- Used to create atmosphere, to link shots or sequences.
11. Synchronous sound- This is used when a sound effect is matched with another technical event or action.
12. Asynchronous sound- This is when a sound originates from outside of the diegetic reality of the film.
13. Contrapuntal- Noise or sound effect which doesn't match the visuals, often juxtaposed to create an alternative meaning.
14. Silence- This effect is usually created to to provoke a reaction from the audience.
15. Selective sound- Used to emphasise key sound elements within a sequence.
16. Sound Bridges- To help transitions between sequences pass more fluently e.g from past to present.
Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the films world. It can also be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame. This type of sound can create many different meanings for an audience.Non-diegetic sound is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action. Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from a source outside its story space.
After watching the opening of the Sherlock Holmes clip, the diegetic sounds being made are the guns getting cocked and loaded, the chains rattling, the scream at the start, the horses hooves clanking together, the crow squawking, the boots rattling from when he jumps and the glass breaking.
